CYBERSPACE: A PLACE WHERE HUMOUR, CRITICAL DEBATE AND MUTUAL RESPECT CAN COEXIST

Today, cyberspace is no longer merely a platform for connecting, sharing information and entertainment. It has also become an open forum where individuals can express their views, voice their opinions and engage in discussions on matters of public interest. However, alongside the opportunities offered by the digital environment, the manner in which individuals interact online and their responsibilities when participating in cyberspace have become increasingly important issues.

A healthy online environment does not require everyone to share the same views or avoid disagreements. On the contrary, diversity of perspectives, constructive criticism and open dialogue are essential elements that contribute to social development. What matters is that individuals recognise the boundaries of freedom of expression and understand their responsibilities for the content they publish, share or comment on.

In particular, in an environment where information can spread rapidly and reach a wide audience, an ill-considered statement, unverified information or personal attacks may give rise to consequences far beyond an ordinary online debate. Accordingly, respecting differences, verifying information and communicating responsibly should become fundamental principles of online conduct.

From a legal perspective, freedom of speech and the right to express opinions must be exercised within the framework of applicable laws, while respecting the lawful rights and interests of other individuals and organisations. A civilised cyberspace requires not only an appropriate legal framework but also the awareness and self-regulation of every internet user.

In this spirit, Lawyer Tran Nhat Hoang, Director of CBI Law Firm, contributed to an article titled “Cyberspace Has Room for Humour, Critical Debate and Respect,” published by the Vietnam Cybersecurity Journal. The piece offers an insightful perspective on how we can collectively build an open and healthy digital environment—one where humour, critical debate, and mutual respect can all coexist.

CBI Law Firm believes that a civilised cyberspace is not one without disagreement, but rather one where everyone can express their views responsibly while respecting others’ right to hold different opinions.
